blight disease

I have lost about four tomato plants, and six cucumber plants to some sort of blight disease. The leaves began to wilt, turn yellow and brown and die. Eventually the entire plant died. The only way I know to treat it is to avoid planting in that same soil again, and grow blight resistant varieties.
